Ex-Bethesda Dev Hints at Fallout 3 Gunplay Fix in Remaster

Author : Hunter Update : Feb 10,2026

The enthusiastic reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has fans wondering which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With rumors circulating about a potential Fallout 3 remaster (following 2023 leaks), questions arise about how Bethesda might enhance this iconic 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG.

Bruce Nesmith, one of Fallout 3's original designers, has openly criticized the game's "subpar" gunplay mechanics, suggesting this would be a key improvement area for any remastered version.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith indicated a Fallout 3 remaster would likely adopt the more refined shooting mechanics from Fallout 4.

"Fallout 4's combat improvements reflect what the team identified as needing refinement from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained. "The gunplay received significant upgrades in Fallout 4 precisely because Fallout 3 marked our first attempt at shooter-style gameplay. The progress made was substantial."

The Oblivion Remaster, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, implements numerous visual and gameplay enhancements. Beyond expected 4K/60fps performance, the project features revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and UI improvements. New dialogue, an enhanced third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology contribute to what many consider essentially a remake rather than just a remaster - though Bethesda maintains this classification.

Nesmith believes a Fallout 3 remaster would follow Oblivion's example in scope of improvements.

"Fallout 3's combat didn't compete with contemporary shooters even at launch," he noted. "As an RPG with shooter elements rather than pure FPS, it needed work. Fallout 4 made crucial advancements that would logically carry over to any remaster."

"The Oblivion remaster exceeded simple visual upgrades to match Skyrim's 2011 quality," Nesmith continued. "It represents a generational leap that some might call 'Oblivion 2.0.' This standard would likely apply to other remaster projects."

Bethesda maintains a packed development schedule, balancing The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, Fallout 76 updates, and production for the Fallout TV series' New Vegas-themed second season alongside these remaster projects.
