Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Unveiled

Nintendo's newly unveiled Game-Key Cards for Switch 2 have certainly stirred conversation. Following last month's Switch 2 reveal, the company confirmed that some game cards won't contain full games but rather digital download codes. However, Nintendo later specified that Switch 2 Edition titles include both the game and upgrades on the cartridge.
These Game-Key Cards serve as physical purchase options that simply unlock digital downloads, containing no actual game data. Each clearly marked case indicates this format upfront, allowing informed purchasing decisions.
Titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster utilize this system, while major releases such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza contain complete games. The data-heavy Cyberpunk 2077 occupies a full 64 GB cartridge - the maximum capacity for Switch 2.
The industry response has been mixed. Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick expressed disappointment, stating: "Seeing Nintendo take this approach is concerning. For a company with such heritage, we expected stronger commitment to game preservation."
During Nintendo's San Francisco store opening, IGN queried Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser about the future of physical media: "Physical games remain vital to our business," Bowser responded. "We maintain strong retail partnerships and will continue offering products consumers want."

Bowser explained the Game-Key Card rationale: "Our goal mirrors Switch's success - delivering the most extensive game library possible. This approach enables partners to bring more ambitious, immersive experiences to Switch 2."
CD Projekt confirms the 64 GB Cyberpunk cart represents Switch 2's maximum capacity. Meanwhile, Nintendo keeps first-party game sizes modest:
Nintendo Switch 2 Storage Requirements:
Mario Kart World: 23.4 GB
Donkey Kong Bananza: 10 GB
Nintendo Classics: GameCube app: 3.5 GB
Super Mario Party Jamboree – Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV: 7.7 GB
Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World: 5.7 GB
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad notes most third-party Switch 2 releases use Game-Key Cards, potentially straining the eShop during launch: "Physical media costs rise exponentially with storage. Digital distribution offers publishers better margins, especially as digital sales dominate."
Game Business editor Christopher Dring sees broader implications: "Between shrinking retail spaces, production costs, shifting consumer habits, and sustainability concerns, the industry clearly trends toward digital."
