Netflix's Gears of War film progresses, Marcus Fenix unclear

The Fall Guy Director Eyes Gears of War Adaptation
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that David Leitch, acclaimed director of Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and Bullet Train (2022), is currently negotiating to direct Netflix's Gears of War film adaptation.
Leitch and producing partner Kelly McCormick would reportedly join forces with Gears developer The Coalition on the project. Jon Spaihts (Dune, Doctor Strange) is attached to pen the screenplay.
After Netflix acquired the Gears of War rights two-and-a-half years ago, momentum finally appears to be building. Alongside the live-action film, reports indicate an adult animated series is also in development, with additional expansions planned contingent on the adaptations' success.
Marcus Fenix Casting Speculation
The burning question remains: Who will embody franchise hero Marcus Fenix? Former wrestler Dave Bautista has been vocally campaigning for the role — repeatedly emphasizing his enthusiasm — and has received public endorsement from Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski.

Microsoft's Adaptation Strategy
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated in March that despite Halo's mixed reception, the company remains committed to game adaptations. Spencer emphasized Microsoft's growing confidence in this space, citing learning experiences from both Halo and Fallout.
"We're learning and evolving through this process," Spencer noted. "While not every adaptation will succeed, fans can expect more projects as we continue building our expertise."
Meanwhile in gaming, The Coalition is developing Gears of War: E-Day, though the prequel currently lacks an official release window.
