Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is set to be shut down just six months after its initial launch in September 2024—and only weeks after making its way to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s developer, Mountaintop Studios, will also be closing its doors permanently.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell officially confirmed the news through a statement shared on social media today.
“Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” the post reads.

The development team remained hopeful following the first week of launch, reporting that the game attracted approximately 400,000 players—with a peak concurrent user count of around 10,000 across all platforms.
However, as time progressed, the studio failed to maintain sufficient player engagement and revenue to cover ongoing operational costs for both Spectre Divide and the studio itself.
“We stretched our remaining capital as far as we could since the PC launch, but at this point, we’re out of funding to support the game,” Mitchell continued.
The studio explored multiple avenues to continue operations—including seeking a publishing partner, additional investment, or acquisition—but ultimately was unable to secure a viable solution.
“The industry is in a tough spot right now,” he added.
Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days, and all purchases made by players since the Season 1 launch will be fully refunded.
This announcement comes as a surprise, especially in light of comments made by Mitchell back in October 2024, where he insisted Spectre Divide “isn’t going anywhere.”
“The servers aren’t shutting down, and the updates aren’t going to stop,” he stated at the time, asserting that Mountaintop had “the funds to support Spectre for a long time.”
IGN’s early preview of Spectre Divide in August 2024 praised the tactical 3v3 gameplay and highlighted the unique Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously during matches.
However, the shutdown of Spectre Divide follows a string of recent live-service disappointments, including the failure of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Sony’s Concord.
