Marvel Rivals Players Are Risking Account Bans to Mod the Game Even After Season 1 Clampdown

Author : Logan Update : May 02,2025

Despite the risk of account bans, Marvel Rivals players are still using mods, even after a significant crackdown with the release of Season 1. Since the game's highly successful launch in December, players have been customizing skins with mods, such as transforming Iron Man into Vegeta from Dragon Ball, Mantis into a goth, and Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from Chainsaw Man.

Last week, alongside the launch of the Fantastic Four and Season 1, Marvel Rivals implemented a secret mod restriction through asset hash checking. Developer NetEase emphasized to IGN that the game's terms and conditions prohibit mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. They had previously warned players about potential issues with mods, and reinforced this message in a statement to IGN: "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned."

Despite these warnings, some players remain undeterred. A workaround has been discovered and is now widely shared online. Although it involves more steps than before, it is still manageable for most PC users. Modder Prafit, who uploaded the workaround to Nexus Mods, cautioned players: "Use at your own risk," Prafit stated in the mod description. "By using this, you are circumventing a system designed to prevent modding starting with the Season 1 patch. No one knows if NetEase will ban you, but as far as we know, they have never issued permanent bans."

Following the addition of Fantastic Four characters, new mods have emerged. For instance, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from the manga One Piece. According to Nexus Mods statistics, this Luffy mod has been downloaded over 5,000 times in just two days since its release.

The question remains whether NetEase will follow through with bans as threatened. The community has yet to find a confirmed case of a player being banned for using mods, but these workarounds might provoke further action.

NetEase's interest in banning mods stems from several factors. Besides potential lost revenue from skin sales and intellectual property concerns, mods can disrupt gameplay balance and affect game performance. Modder Prafit noted that their temporary workaround should only be used by those with a "beefy" PC.
