"Leader's Design in Captain America: Brave New World Echoes Comic Book Origins"
In the world of superhero cinema, every hero needs a formidable foe. For the upcoming film "Captain America: Brave New World," fans are introduced to the iconic villain, The Leader, portrayed by actor Tim Blake Nelson. Blue Whale Studios, responsible for the character's design and effects in the MCU film, recently shared insights into their original concept for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which closely mirrored the comic book version.
Based in Atlanta, Blue Whale Studios initially envisioned a more sickly appearance for The Leader. Their Instagram post showcased a design featuring an engorged head and pale green skin, aligning with the character's comic origins. Although the initial design was simpler and lacked the intricate mutations seen in the final film, it offered a glimpse into the creative process. The studio also shared a video of the prosthetics application on Nelson, providing fans with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look.
"We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World," Blue Whale Studios explained. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."
The studio aimed to create a design that was both grounded and iconic, drawing directly from the original comic book art. They emphasized achieving a refined, natural realism in the makeup, which was also lightweight and comfortable for Nelson, thanks to the dedication of their exceptional team.
The original design bears a striking resemblance to The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comics, introduced in "Tales to Astonish #62" in 1964. Interestingly, the final design in "Brave New World" reflects more recent comic iterations, such as those seen in 2018's "Immortal Hulk."
The Leader's journey to becoming a villain in the MCU began with a hint in 2008's "The Incredible Hulk," where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-infused blood. This exposure eventually transformed him into The Leader we see at the start of "Brave New World."
Last May, reports surfaced that "Captain America: Brave New World" was undergoing reshoots to incorporate a new villainous character, Sidewinder, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito, known for his roles in "Breaking Bad," "Star Wars," and "The Boys," leads the Serpent Society in the film.
Additionally, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut from the film due to extensive script rewrites and subsequent reshoots ahead of its release.
