GTA 6 Mapping Project Advances with Second Trailer

Author : Max Update : Dec 09,2025

The release of the second Grand Theft Auto VI trailer has energized the long-running mapping project, with a lead member telling IGN it “completely changes our plans for the rest of the year.”

The GTA VI Mapping Discord is buzzing with activity as its 370 members—soon to exceed 400—dig into Trailer 2, analyzing the wealth of new details it provides.

“It’s an information overload. This reshapes our entire roadmap for the coming months,” Garza, the Discord server moderator, told IGN. “We have so much fresh material to work through, and we’re just getting started.”

The GTA VI Mapping Discord was established shortly after the massive September 2022 leaks—the same leaks many believe Rockstar subtly referenced at the beginning of Trailer 2. Its mission is to build the most precise GTA VI map possible, a task that, until Trailer 2’s release, relied on those leaks and the first trailer from December 2023.

The most recent iteration of the GTA VI map, shared by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is already outdated. The flood of information from Trailer 2 allows for a far more detailed and accurate representation.

Besides confirming plot details and characters, and sharing 70 all-new GTA VI screenshots, Rockstar unveiled information and images of explorable locations across Leonida—GTA VI’s version of Florida.

Locations confirmed in this week’s reveal include Vice City (GTA VI’s take on Miami), the tropical Leonida Keys archipelago, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a landmark near the state’s northern border.

Volunteers will also analyze the trailer meticulously, pinpointing the exact locations shown and comparing fictional settings to their real-world counterparts to lock in more of the GTA VI map. Once this work is finished, DuPz0r will publish an updated map, which fans hope will offer the clearest preview yet of what to expect when GTA VI launches in May 2026.

If Rockstar releases more assets ahead of launch—perhaps offering a first true look at gameplay—the volunteers will dive right back in. Only when the game is out and the fan-made map can be compared to the real one will the accuracy of their efforts be known.

Of course, a looming question over the GTA VI mapping project is whether Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, might shut it down. In March, a modder who recreated a playable version of the GTA VI map within GTA V halted all work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. Their mod was based on the GTA VI mapping project.

When asked last year if he was worried about potential action from Take-Two, Garza admitted to “some mild concern.”

“This project has been running for a long time without direct interference,” Garza explained. “Still, I always keep in mind the possibility that they might contact us. We don’t feature leaked content directly in the map, so I don’t think they’d target it specifically. My sense is they recognize this project generates excitement and interest in the game—everyone wants to see what the world might look like. That could be why they haven’t intervened so far. Of course, if I ever received a cease and desist, I would comply respectfully. As we get closer to a final map, such a notice becomes more likely.”

While we wait to see what happens, catch up on everything we know so far about GTA VI, including all the details uncovered to date and the fan theories sparked by Trailer 2.
