Civ 7's 1.1.1 Update Aims to Boost Competitiveness Against Civ 6 and Civ 5 on Steam

Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has announced a significant update, version 1.1.1, which arrives at a time when the game's player count on Steam is lower than both Civilization 6 and the 15-year-old Civilization 5. On Steam, Civilization 7's 24-hour peak player count stands at 16,921, which falls short of making it into the platform's top 100 most-played games. In comparison, Civilization 5, released in 2010, achieved a 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, boasted a peak of 40,676 players, indicating that many Civilization fans are still loyal to the previous installment.

In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis outlined several "additions and refinements" coming with Update 1.1.1, including:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
  • Additional UI Updates & Polish
  • Settlement & Commander Renaming
  • And more!

In an in-depth video, lead designer Ed Beach discussed these changes and pointed to the full patch notes, which are expected to be released soon.

Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:

----------------------------------------

Quick Move is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu. This feature allows units to move to their destination immediately, enabling players to experience the game at a faster pace.

A major update involves the new start position option related to map generation. The default setting for single-player games is now Standard, which provides a more varied and less predictable map layout reminiscent of Civilization 6. For multiplayer games, the Balanced setting remains in place to ensure a level playing field with consistent maps.

Players can now rename settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their gameplay. Additionally, a new feature allows players to restart the game with a single click to achieve the perfect first settlement. This function recreates the map with new seeds but retains the same leader and civilization selections, similar to Civilization 6.

The user interface has seen several improvements. The city and town panel now remains open when purchasing items, a new notification alerts players when a city is under attack, and there are new indicators for crises along with enhanced resource tooltips. There are also significant changes to the game's pacing.

Alongside these updates, a new civilization, Bulgaria, is being introduced today, March 25, as part of the paid Crossroads of the World Collection, along with Nepal and the new leader, Simón Bolívar.

Civilization 7 has been a controversial addition to the series, particularly among long-time fans due to its new mechanics. The game has struggled to maintain player numbers on Steam, and it currently holds a 'mixed' user review rating on the platform. IGN's review gave Civilization 7 a score of 7/10.

In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback from both press and players but expressed optimism that the "legacy Civ audience" would eventually embrace the game. He described Civilization 7's early performance as "very encouraging" and hinted at future developments, including potential updates for fan-favorite characters like Gandhi.
