Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Bethesda Game Studios has recently clarified why Virtuos' newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is not considered a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series explained the distinction between a remaster and a remake, emphasizing their approach with Oblivion.
"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology," Bethesda stated. This clarification comes as fans are getting their first official look at Oblivion Remastered and are able to experience it firsthand. The game, which has just been released, brings a host of visual upgrades and some key gameplay enhancements. Notable changes include the introduction of sprinting and a new level-up system that blends elements from both the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Despite numerous tweaks, ranging from redesigned sewer grates to significant gameplay additions, many players feel that Oblivion Remastered borders on being a remake rather than just a remaster. This sentiment is fueled by the trend over the last decade where remasters often focus solely on minor visual improvements. However, Bethesda insists that Oblivion Remastered, which they began developing in 2021, is not a full remake.
"We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," Bethesda added. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."
The studio expressed gratitude to both long-time fans revisiting Oblivion and new players experiencing the land of Cyrodiil for the first time. "Our hope with this remaster is, that no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time," they shared.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and can also be played through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
