Recently, Matthew Karch, the head of Saber Interactive, shared his vision for the future of the gaming industry, suggesting that the era of high-budget AAA games may be drawing to a close. Karch, whose company developed Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2, expressed his belief that the exorbitant costs associated with these games, ranging from $200 to $400 million, are no longer necessary or appropriate. He went further to suggest that these high budgets could be a significant factor contributing to the mass layoffs seen across the gaming industry.

The term "AAA" has lost its original meaning, according to game developers. Once used to denote projects with large budgets, high quality, and low risk of failure, the term now symbolizes a race for profit that often compromises on quality and innovation. Charles Cecil, co-founder of Revolution Studios, echoed this sentiment, labeling the term "silly and meaningless." He pointed out that the industry's shift towards large investments from major publishers has not been beneficial. Cecil remarked, "It's a meaningless and silly term. It's a holdover from a period when things were changing, but not in a positive way."

An example of this shift is Ubisoft's Skull and Bones, which the company boldly labeled as a "AAAA game," highlighting the industry's trend towards escalating budgets and expectations without necessarily enhancing the gaming experience.
