The announcement of Space Marine 3 development sent shockwaves through the Warhammer 40,000 community, sparking concern about the future of Space Marine 2. Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made this revelation in mid-March, just six months after the release of Space Marine 2, amidst ongoing concerns about the game's content and player retention.

In response to these concerns, both companies issued a blog post reassuring fans of their commitment to Space Marine 2. They emphasized that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of support for its predecessor. "Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support," the statement read. "So let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain."

The companies outlined their plans for Space Marine 2, confirming that the year one roadmap is still in place, with Patch 7 slated for release in mid-April. Excitingly, they promised the introduction of a new class, additional PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. The statement teased, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)." They also clarified that the announcement of Space Marine 3 simply marks the beginning of a new project, which is years away from release.

The big reveal for Space Marine 2 is the addition of a new class, speculated to be either the Apothecary or the Librarian, the latter bringing the allure of warp-powered space magic. Fans are also eager about the new melee weapon, with many expressing a desire for the axe featured in Secret Level’s animated Warhammer 40,000 episode, a weapon that modders have already incorporated into the game.

The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 comes as no surprise, given the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following Space Marine 2's launch, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits, hinted at the possibility of story DLC and mentioned that ideas for Space Marine 3 were already in discussion. Without spoiling the Space Marine 2 campaign, it's clear that a continuation is on the horizon, with IGN reporting on the likely enemy faction for Space Marine 3. Willits also noted, "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel. Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting..."
