This announcement came just a few weeks after the release of its first trailer, leaving fans astonished. The game was initially available for wishlisting on Steam starting April 1, followed by its first official gameplay teaser on April 2. Although the concept of the game was introduced in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex began accepting sign-ups for alpha testing for what was described as a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official reveal of the game as RuneScape: Dragonwilds happened on March 31, 2025.

The developers at Jagex are aiming for an official release of Dragonwilds in early 2026. They emphasized their commitment to refining the game, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure that our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that they’ll want to revisit with friends time and again."

Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, tailored for both long-time fans and newcomers. He noted, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be regularly updating the game with new content and features, all while closely engaging with the community to craft an iconic open-world survival game that resonates with all players."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex has shared an exciting early access roadmap, detailing the upcoming enhancements for Dragonwilds. A key highlight is the introduction of a new region, Fellhollow, a mystical area caught between the realms of life and death. This region is dominated by the soul-eater dragon Imaru, influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will be accompanied by the iconic RuneScape character Death, embarking on new quests, uncovering lore, and acquiring new gear and music. New skills in magic, ranged combat, and farming will also be introduced.

Additionally, the game will feature a new enemy type, Lesser Dragons, along with dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific release dates for these updates are not set, Jagex assures continuous improvements throughout the early access phase.
