Robert Eggers Set to Helm Labyrinth Sequel
Robert Eggers, acclaimed director of the gothic horror film "Nosferatu," is set to helm a sequel to the cherished classic, "Labyrinth." According to Variety, Eggers will both write and direct the follow-up to Jim Henson’s 1986 dark fantasy masterpiece, which originally starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He will co-write the screenplay with Sjón, his collaborator on "The Northman." Previously, a sequel was in development with Scott Derrickson, the director of "Sinister," but after no updates since 2023, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have chosen to proceed with Eggers' vision for the new sequel.
First released in 1986, "Labyrinth" featured David Bowie as the enchanting Goblin King Jareth, who abducts Jennifer Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character embarks on a daring journey through a mesmerizing fantasy realm, aided by a colorful cast of Henson's iconic puppets, to rescue her sibling. In addition to the "Labyrinth" sequel, Eggers is also working on a werewolf film titled "Werwulf," slated for a Christmas 2026 release. This movie will be set in 13th-century England, featuring dialogue in Old English. While details are scarce, it's safe to assume that the film will include a transformation into a fearsome wolf creature.
Eggers' latest film, "Nosferatu," which hit theaters last Christmas, is a reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film classic. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a young real estate agent who travels to Transylvania to sell a castle to its enigmatic count, only to unleash a wave of vampiric horrors that engulf his life and that of his wife, Ellen.
"Nosferatu" has garnered significant acclaim, receiving four Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. For a detailed review of "Nosferatu," you can visit our dedicated review page here.
