Michael J. Fox Seeks Lost Marty McFly Guitar from Back to the Future

Author : Dylan Update : Jun 29,2025

Michael J. Fox and Gibson have officially launched a public campaign to locate the iconic guitar he played during the Enchantment Under the Sea dance scene in the classic 1985 film *Back to the Future*. In a newly released YouTube video, Fox directly addressed fans, asking for their help in tracking down the legendary instrument. “We need your help—we’re trying to find the guitar I played in *Back to the Future*,” Fox said with his signature charm. “It’s either lost somewhere in the space-time continuum or sitting in some teamster’s garage.”

Gibson, the manufacturer of the Cherry Red ES-345 guitar used in the film, has supported the initiative by releasing a stylized “Wanted” poster posing the question: “Have You Seen This Guitar?” The campaign features appearances from key cast members including Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines-McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Emmett Brown), who also encouraged fans to share any information via a dedicated website or tip line set up by Gibson. Huey Lewis, whose song “Power of Love” plays during the memorable scene, made a cameo in the promotional video as well.

A Documentary on the Search for the Lost Guitar

The ongoing search will be chronicled in an upcoming documentary titled *Lost to the Future*, produced by Gibson. The instrument has been missing for over 40 years, and the company chose this year—marking the 40th anniversary of the film’s release—to reignite interest and uncover new leads.

“We’ve been looking into leads and rumors for a long time, and as you can imagine, we’re talking about events from 40 years ago, so memories fade,” shared Doc Crotzer, director of the documentary, in a recent interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*. “This was long before the era of digital trails, receipts, or documentation. There are conflicting reports too—about as many versions of what happened as there are people to ask.”

Bob Gale Shuts Down Back to the Future Reboot Rumors

In other *Back to the Future* news, Bob Gale, co-writer of the original trilogy, recently reiterated that there will never be another *Back to the Future* project of any kind. His comments come in response to speculation sparked by the creators of *Cobra Kai*, who hinted at the possibility of a *Back to the Future* TV series.

“I don’t know why they keep talking about that!” Gale exclaimed to *People* magazine. “Do they think if they say it enough times, we’ll actually do it?” He went on to clarify once again: “When is there going to be a *Back to the Future 4*? Never. A prequel? Never. A spinoff? Never. It’s just fine the way it is. It’s not perfect, but as Bob Zemeckis used to say, ‘It’s perfect enough.’”
