6 Images"Hey, Mary!" is crafted by writer Andrew Wheeler, known for "Cat Fight" and "Another Castle," and illustrated by Rye Hickman, who has worked on "The Harrowing" and "Bad Dream." Here's the official synopsis from Oni Press:

Mark is a devout Catholic boy. He attends church, prays regularly, and often worries about the concept of hell. When he discovers his feelings for another boy at school, Mark grapples with aligning these emotions with his faith, burdened by centuries of shame and judgment, and fearful of his parents' reaction. Seeking advice, Mark turns to his priest and a local drag performer, but also receives unexpected guidance from key Catholic historical figures like Joan of Arc, Michelangelo, St. Sebastian, and Savonarola. The central question Mark faces is whether it's possible to be both Catholic and gay.

Andrew Wheeler shared with IGN, "Hey, Mary! explores the tension between queerness and Catholicism through the lens of teenage angst experienced by Mark. For those who are queer and Catholic, these tensions are deeply rooted in centuries of art and expression. By focusing on Mark's journey, we aim to make this exploration more accessible. In the excerpt, Mark receives an art history lesson from his friend and crush, Luka, and a surprising intervention from a notable queer Catholic icon. It's engaging, educational, and thought-provoking!"

Rye Hickman added, "A special thanks to our colorist, Hank Jones, for the vibrant colors on the turtles in the first page of this preview! 'Hey, Mary!' is filled with art history references, creating a sort of sequential Easter egg hunt. Religious iconography throughout the ages has been a significant aspect of the Catholic Church's influence. From The Pietà to anonymous wood carvings of Jesus on the cross, Catholic imagery is powerful, evocative, and emotionally charged—sometimes even carrying a sexual undertone that can be difficult to reconcile."

Wheeler concluded, "Incorporating Catholic art references into the narrative was a delightful challenge, and Rye's execution is brilliant. These references enhance the visual storytelling, whether you catch them or not."
