Destiny 2 Year of Prophecy: Essential Guardian Guide

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting roadmap for Destiny 2, introducing two new expansions and major updates under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four "major content beats," featuring two paid expansions and two free updates for all players, ensuring a thrilling journey ahead.

Kicking off the Year of Prophecy is "Rite of the Nine," a free update already available to all players. This update offers a fresh take on dungeon diving, reintroducing familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists. Players will reconnect with Orin and enjoy refreshed dungeon weapons, providing new challenges and rewards for both seasoned and new dungeon explorers.

On July 15, the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine. This expansion will introduce new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and take players to the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2's dungeons, Kepler promises puzzle-solving challenges, deep exploration, and new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Alongside The Edge of Fate, Bungie will roll out "major core game innovations" on July 15, including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new Portal activity selection screen. This screen allows players to choose between various activities like Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, catering to different play styles and preferences. With 50 new modifiers and curated activity rotations, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards.

As with any new expansion, pre-order incentives are available. The Edge of Fate Pre-Order includes the campaign, a new raid, an Active Rewards Pass, and exclusive Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. The Year of Prophecy Edition and Ultimate Edition offer even more content, including additional campaigns, raids, dungeons, rewards passes, and exclusive items like the Exotic Sniper Rifle, New Land Beyond, and the Dark Side Legends Bundle.

Following The Edge of Fate, the "Ash & Iron" update will launch on September 9, with the second expansion, "Renegades," set to release on December 2. Inspired by the Star Wars universe, Renegades will blend Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3, 2026.

These updates come at a crucial time for Bungie, following significant layoffs in July 2024, which affected 220 staff members, or 17% of its workforce, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains committed to delivering rich content for Destiny 2 players.

In addition to Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon, revealed in May 2023. Recent hands-on previews suggest that Marathon is shaping up to be a promising PvP experience, set to launch on PC and consoles in September.
