Buffy Reboot: Sarah Michelle Gellar to Return

It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu.

According to Variety, a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is on the horizon at Hulu, with the original star Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to return as the iconic vampire hunter. The new series will introduce a fresh Slayer, but fans can expect to see Gellar as a recurring character.

Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, celebrated for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in negotiations to direct and executive produce this revival. Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are set to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in the project, following allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of the original series and its spinoff, Angel.

While plot details remain under wraps, the focus will be on a new Slayer, with Gellar potentially reprising her role as Buffy. The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student destined to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings, alongside her friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and her Watcher, Rupert Giles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. It also spawned a spinoff, Angel, and was continued through a series of canon comic books.
