"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"
The iconic 1976 arcade game *Breakout* is set to receive a modern reimagining with *Breakout Beyond*, arriving nearly five decades after its original release. This innovative sequel retains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanic but introduces a fresh, dynamic twist—everything moves sideways.
Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative force behind the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond shifts gameplay from top-down to horizontal progression as players guide their paddle from left to right across increasingly challenging stages. The core goal remains unchanged: destroy bricks and build momentum. As combos grow, so does the intensity of visual effects, creating an electrifying experience that evolves with each level.
Special bricks unlock unique power-ups that elevate the action even further—from explosive chain reactions to a fully functional laser cannon. With 72 carefully crafted levels planned, plus an unlockable endless mode featuring a global online leaderboard, there’s plenty to keep players engaged. And for those who prefer teamwork, local two-player co-op is also available.
Originally developed as a launch title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, *Breakout Beyond* found a new home when Atari acquired the project and committed to finishing its development. “We're thrilled to bring this gem to our players,” said Ethan Stearns, Atari’s senior director of games publishing. “The team thought it was a brilliant concept—preserving the heart of *Breakout's* gameplay while giving the formula a completely new spin. *Breakout Beyond* is a worthy new entry into the *Breakout* pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will create.”
The Intellivision Amico, first announced in 2018 with a planned 2020 release, has faced multiple delays and production hurdles over the years. While Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, the Amico console itself was not part of the deal.
*Breakout Beyond* is scheduled to launch later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
