Sydney Sweeney to Lead in Split Fiction Film Adaptation
Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in "Madame Web," is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game "Split Fiction." The project, which is gaining momentum, is being spearheaded by Story Kitchen, a company renowned for their successful video game adaptations, including the Sonic films. According to Variety, the film has secured "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu and has a script penned by the screenwriters behind "Deadpool & Wolverine," Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. As the talent package is being shopped around to Hollywood studios, an intense bidding war is anticipated.
The crucial decision of which sister Sydney Sweeney will portray—Zoe or Mio—remains undecided. "Split Fiction," developed by Hazelight and led by designer Josef Fares, has been a massive hit since its launch in March, selling over 2 million copies in its first week. The game is also slated to be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
IGN's review of "Split Fiction" awarded it a 9/10, praising its innovative co-op gameplay and dynamic shifts between genres: "An expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that’s very hard to walk away from."
Hazelight's success extends beyond "Split Fiction," with another of their games, "It Takes Two," which sold 23 million copies, also in development for a film adaptation. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is rumored to star in this project. While there's always a risk that these adaptations might not come to fruition, the current trend of successful video game movies suggests a strong likelihood of success.
Story Kitchen's portfolio is expanding beyond "Split Fiction," with announced adaptations including Square Enix's "Just Cause" directed by Ángel Manuel Soto of "Blue Beetle" fame, as well as "Dredge: The Movie," "Kingmakers," "Sleeping Dogs," and a live-action Toys 'R' Us movie. Meanwhile, Hazelight is already teasing its next game project.
