Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer
Fans of the Star Wars universe, take note: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. The project, shrouded in mystery, has received a promising update from writer Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting that the film might arrive sooner than expected. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While details remain sparse, we do know that Levy's film will be set in the Star Wars timeline after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed this in a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
Kennedy also mentioned that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Adding to the excitement, it's reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this highly anticipated project.
Given the timeline, fans might have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for Levy's film to hit the screens. However, Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that progress is being made.
Since the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has faced challenges with its Star Wars films, canceling several projects including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie planned for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney, with reports suggesting her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Additionally, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga as initially speculated.
The next Star Wars content to grace screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode, promising an exciting continuation of the series.
