Ryan Reynolds Proposes R-Rated Star Wars Film to Disney

Author : Nathan Update : May 26,2025

Ryan Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, recently revealed on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While he didn't specify whether it would be a movie or a TV show, nor if Disney accepted the pitch, Reynolds outlined his vision for the project. He suggested using lesser-known characters to explore deeper emotional themes, emphasizing that an R-rating could serve as a "Trojan Horse for emotion" rather than just for vulgarity.

Reynolds has a strong track record with R-rated films, having been involved in some of the highest-grossing R-rated movies, including Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, which also starred Hugh Jackman, is the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, earning over $1.3 billion according to Box Office Mojo.

Despite his enthusiasm for an R-rated Star Wars project, Reynolds clarified that he wouldn't want to appear on-screen in such a production. Instead, he expressed interest in contributing behind the scenes as a producer or writer. He believes that the success of such IPs often hinges on scarcity and surprise, elements he feels could still be achieved within the Star Wars universe despite the extensive content available on Disney+.
