Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Status

Author : Nora Update : May 06,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, stating that such a move would signify the character's "end." This comment comes amidst speculation fueled by the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Deadpool's expressed desire to join the Avengers in the film. Many believed Marvel Studios would be eager to integrate the 'Merc with a Mouth' into their upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured a significant number of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, confirming a substantial X-Men presence in the film. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X in the X-Men films, briefly appeared in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen, Cumming, Romijn, and Marsden, who played Magneto, Nightcrawler, Mystique, and Cyclops respectively, have yet to appear in the MCU. This heavy inclusion of X-Men characters has led to speculation about whether Avengers: Doomsday might be setting up an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline.

Despite the excitement around Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the confirmed cast list, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds elaborated on his stance, saying, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." However, he hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo in a supporting role, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for Deadpool's future, Reynolds is currently working on a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could potentially mean another Deadpool film with a focus on cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Characters such as Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23 could all return.

Turning to Avengers: Doomsday, beyond the cast list, little is known about the plot. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, recently expressed his belief that the film will recapture the "old Marvel feeling" that fans love. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), have also shared their enthusiasm for the project. Additionally, a leaked set photo sparked intense speculation among fans, some of whom fear it might signal trouble for the X-Men's involvement.

Rumors have circulated that Oscar Isaac might appear as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, especially after he withdrew from the Star Wars Celebration event due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has hinted that the cast revealed so far is not exhaustive, stating at CinemaCon, "We revealed many, not all."
