PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview
PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it shows considerable promise.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience shines in 2K25; I encountered few significant flaws. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional frame rate hiccups on PC (particularly when surveying holes), were easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging experiences, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots laterally adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, provided a significant advantage.
MyCareer mode receives a welcome upgrade with narrative mechanics. I even participated in a movie scene with Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and gear purchased with VC affects performance. The addition of weekly Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, allows for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any one area. This makes it less sensational but still a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
