Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues
Nintendo has addressed concerns about the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2. During the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct, the controller was introduced with a caveat: it is "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library. Nintendo has since clarified that while the GameCube controller is primarily designed for playing GameCube titles, it might be possible to use it with other Switch 2 games, though there could be "issues" due to the lack of modern controller features.
Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is optimized for the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection and serves as an optional accessory for enjoying those retro games. However, because it does not include all the buttons and features of contemporary controllers, users may encounter limitations when attempting to play other games on the Switch 2. Additionally, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch.
In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo confirmed, "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games. Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
