Warner Bros. Games Shutting Down MultiVersus

Multiversus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season

MultiVersus’ official Twitter (X) account announced on January 31, 2025, that the game will be shutting down permanently on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. In a detailed blog post on MultiVersus’ official website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. stated that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."

MultiVersus Season 5 is scheduled to kick off on February 4, 2025, and will run until May 30, 2025. This season will introduce two new playable characters: DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. According to the blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, the game will no longer be available for download on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.

There has been no official statement from MultiVersus regarding the reasons behind its shutdown.

Following the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue enjoying the game "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this mode, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus during the Season 5 timeframe, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.

After logging in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the players’ PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This feature will enable them to keep playing MultiVersus offline with all the content they've earned or purchased.

MultiVersus ceased real money transactions on January 31, 2025. Consequently, Gleamium, the game's premium currency, can no longer be bought from the online store. However, players with remaining Gleamium can use it to unlock in-game content until the end of Season 5.

MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022

MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, offering fans a free-to-play fighting game that drew comparisons to Super Smash Bros., yet set itself apart with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta rolled out several updates and content spanning two Seasons. The game was relaunched in May 2024 with enhancements like new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more.

Despite these updates, the game struggled with persistent technical issues, frequent disconnections, and dissatisfaction with its microtransactions. By July 2024, MultiVersus experienced a significant 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.

MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, featuring 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
