Kathleen Kennedy to Retire from Lucasfilm in 2025

Author : Aria Update : May 16,2025

According to recent reports from Puck News, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is contemplating stepping down by the end of 2025, marking the end of her contract. The seasoned film producer, who initially considered retirement in 2024, decided to postpone her decision. While Variety has labeled Puck's report as "pure speculation," The Hollywood Reporter has corroborated the news, adding weight to the possibility of Kennedy's impending departure.

Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as a co-chair selected by George Lucas himself. Following Lucas's exit, she ascended to the role of president and has since been at the helm of the Star Wars franchise. Her leadership has seen the release of the sequel trilogy, including Star Wars Episodes 7-9, and the launch of Star Wars' streaming ventures, such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Key, and more. While blockbuster hits like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have been successful, other projects like "Solo: A Star Wars Story" faced financial losses and stirred controversy.

Kennedy's potential exit raises questions about the future of several announced and rumored projects. These include new films directed by James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover, as well as an untitled Rey movie that is still in development. Upcoming confirmed projects include "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and a new Star Wars trilogy from Simon Kinberg.

Before her tenure at Lucasfilm, Kennedy co-founded Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Her illustrious career includes producing iconic films such as E.T., Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and other 90s classics, earning her eight Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.
