Rompopolo, a Brute Wyvern-type monster, makes its debut in *Monster Hunter Wilds* during Chapter 2, specifically in Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. You'll first encounter it in the Oilwell Basin region while journeying towards Azuz City. Defeating Rompopolo is crucial to progress further in the game. Once you've vanquished it at least once, Rompopolo's entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then challenge it repeatedly by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by taking on the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest available in your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, gear up with fire-resistant equipment, which can be farmed from Uth Duna (starting with the belt and greaves) or from Ajarakan later in the chapter. For extra protection, consider crafting a fire-resistant Talisman like the Fire Charm I, or opt for a general defense charm such as the Defense Charm I. Before heading out, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by preparing a meal.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo's unique design as a wyvern monster gives it a distinctive set of attacks. Its bipedal form, featuring saggy skin that inflates with gas, allows it to execute various gas-related attacks, including explosive ones. Be wary of its ability to inflict poison status ailments, and always carry Antidotes. Your Palico can be a lifesaver here, as it can cleanse most ailments.
Key attacks to watch for include:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will use its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This is easy to dodge due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – It will charge forward, raising both arms for an arcing swipe.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo will swing its tail at its target.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – It will either spray a stream of poison gas or charge while swinging its head and spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo will use its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge these to avoid significant damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, it will pump more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodging is crucial to avoid severe damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture it, you must first weaken it until your Palico comments that it looks "tired" (indicating it's near death). Then, set a Shock Trap or a Pitfall Trap to ensnare it. Once trapped, use at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture and ending the hunt.
Both methods yield rewards, though the items you receive may vary slightly. Some items are exclusive to capturing, while others are obtained only by killing the monster. While the specific differences in drops are yet to be fully confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank items you can expect from Rompopolo:
