PlaySet in a parallel universe to the original Elden Ring, Nightreign features cooperative gameplay for up to three players. Players select from eight unique Nightfarers, each with distinct abilities and Ultimates, to battle new threats in the ever-changing Limveld environment. A three-day-and-night cycle significantly impacts gameplay, shrinking the map with the Night’s Tide. Each night culminates in a boss battle, with victory leading to increased challenges. The final confrontation is against the Nightlord on the third night.

The official description highlights:

Elden Ring Nightreign begins at the Roundtable Hold. Players choose from eight unique characters, each with their own abilities and powerful Ultimates. Limveld, a constantly shifting environment, demands split-second decisions. The night cycle shrinks the map, creating intense pressure. Defeating nightly bosses unlocks greater challenges. The final challenge is the Nightlord on the third night. Cooperation is key, combining unique abilities for success. Defeat provides relics for character customization. Each session is unique, with ever-changing enemies, rewards, and map. Sites of Grace offer leveling opportunities. Successful runs grant lasting stat bonuses.

IGN's hands-on preview described Nightreign as "turbocharg[ing] the cautious dungeon crawls of Elden Ring into propulsive, slash ‘n’ dash speedruns."
