What is a Stronghold in Minecraft

A stronghold is an extensive underground catacomb, an ancient relic hidden beneath the world. Beyond the valuable resources found in its libraries, prisons, and other chambers, it houses the all-important portal to The End—the dimension of the game's final boss.

You activate this portal using an Eye of Ender. We'll detail this item next, but note that discovering a stronghold through random digging is nearly impossible. The game provides one intended search method, though players have discovered other, less conventional approaches.

How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft

Eye of Ender

This is the official, developer-intended way to locate a stronghold. Craft it from the following materials:

Blaze Powder;Ender Pearl.

Blaze Powder comes from Blaze Rods, dropped by Blazes in the Nether. Ender Pearls are primarily obtained by defeating Endermen, but can also be traded from Cleric villagers or found in stronghold chests.

Once crafted, hold and use the Eye of Ender. It will launch into the air and float in the stronghold's direction for a few seconds. Be warned: it's a consumable item. It may return to your hand or shatter upon use, so use them strategically!

You'll also need Eyes of Ender to activate the End Portal, so gather plenty of resources before your expedition. In Survival mode, having around 30 is a safe bet to both find the stronghold and unlock the portal.

The Locate Command

A faster, though cheaty, method to find a stronghold is by using commands. First, enable cheats in your world settings, then type:

/locate structure stronghold

 for version 1.20 or above.

After getting the coordinates, use the

/tp

command to teleport. The coordinates point to the entrance, but you may need to search the immediate area if the stronghold isn't immediately visible.

Stronghold Rooms

Library

Libraries are spacious rooms built from stone bricks and packed with bookshelves and cobwebs. They are always buried deep within the stronghold's walls, and a single stronghold may contain multiple libraries.

Reward chests are placed among the shelves, containing enchanted books and other useful items. With luck, you might find rare equipment to bolster your adventures.

Prison

The prison is a maze of narrow, barred corridors with dim lighting, creating a perfect habitat for hostile mobs. Skeletons, zombies, and even creepers lurk in the shadows. The danger here isn't from prisoners, but from these relentless creatures waiting around every corner.

Fountain

This room is hard to miss, featuring a central fountain that gives it an air of forgotten magic. Light filtering through cracks dances on the water's surface. This may have been a place for rituals or quiet reflection for the stronghold's original inhabitants.

Secret Rooms

The stronghold's walls often conceal hidden chambers. These secret rooms may contain chests with valuable loot like enchanted books and rare gear. However, beware of traps, such as hidden pressure plates that trigger arrow dispensers. Stay alert—one wrong move could be costly.

Altar

This eerie room might not look like an altar at first. Its stone brick walls are worn with age, and a central stone block resembles a grim prison cell more than a sacred site. Dim torchlight reveals its true nature: an ancient altar left behind by a forgotten civilization.

Stronghold Mobs

Fortunately, strongholds are guarded by relatively weak enemies that players in basic iron armor can handle. You'll primarily encounter skeletons, creepers, and swarms of Silverfish.

While the stronghold offers great rewards, be prepared for these persistent foes, from explosive creepers to the tiny but annoying Silverfish hiding in the walls.

Rewards

Loot in stronghold chests is random, so your haul may vary. Here are some of the valuable items you might discover:

Enchanted book;Iron chestplate;Iron sword;Iron horse armor;Gold horse armor;Diamond horse armor.

Portal to the Ender Dragon

Every journey has an end. In Minecraft Survival mode, after gathering gear and exploring the Overworld, the ultimate challenge awaits within the stronghold: the portal to The End and its guardian, the Ender Dragon.

A Minecraft stronghold is more than just a gateway to the game's finale. It's an adventure in itself, full of exploration, combat, and discovery. After investing time to find one, take the opportunity to fully explore its depths and confront all its challenges.
