Gaming Guide: Minecraft Enchantment with Friends
Enchanting in Minecraft: Play with Friends is a core gameplay mechanic that allows players to infuse their weapons, armor, and tools with powerful magic. These enchantments provide substantial benefits, such as enhanced durability, greater damage output, faster mining speeds, and even special abilities like automatic repair or protection against specific damage types. This guide will walk you through everything from building an enchanting station to selecting the best enchantments for various items, offering strategies to fully optimize your enchanting capabilities.

What is Enchanting and Why is it Important?
Enchanting empowers players to grant special powers and improvements to their gear, offering a significant advantage in combat, resource gathering, and overall survival. Equipment without enchantments is noticeably less effective and more prone to breaking, while unenchanted armor offers only minimal protection. This system enriches the gameplay by letting players customize their tools for specific purposes, such as crafting a pickaxe that increases diamond yield or a sword that ignites enemies. For those tackling more dangerous challenges, including expeditions to the Nether, the End, or facing formidable bosses like the Warden and Ender Dragon, mastering enchantments is practically essential.
How to Set Up an Enchanting Table and Room
Your first step into enchanting is to craft an Enchanting Table. You will need 4 Obsidian blocks, 2 Diamonds, and 1 Book. These materials are considered mid-tier, as mining obsidian requires a diamond pickaxe, and diamonds themselves are a scarce resource early on. Once crafted, the enchanting table becomes the centerpiece of your operation.
To unlock higher-level enchantments, you must place Bookshelves around the enchanting table. You need precisely 15 bookshelves, arranged in a square or circle with a one-block gap between them and the table, ensuring no blocks obstruct this space. Each bookshelf boosts the maximum enchantment level available, reaching the peak of Level 30 when all 15 are correctly positioned. Bookshelves are made from Books (crafted with paper and leather) and Wooden Planks, making sugarcane farms and livestock for leather vital early-game preparations for enchanting.
Lastly, the enchanting process itself consumes Experience Levels (XP) and Lapis Lazuli, a blue ore found at lower depths. A lack of either resource will prevent you from enchanting, incentivizing players to explore, defeat monsters, or construct XP farms.
The Enchanting Process Explained
With your enchanting table ready, the process is simple. Place the item you want to enchant in the first slot of the interface and Lapis Lazuli in the second. The table will present three enchantment choices, each with a specific cost in XP levels and Lapis. The available enchantment strength scales with your current experience level, with the most powerful options becoming accessible only at Level 30.
Hovering your cursor over an enchantment option shows at least one guaranteed effect, but there is frequently a possibility of receiving extra, bonus enchantments. This element of chance adds to the excitement and unpredictability of the system. For players aiming for specific results, enchanting Books directly is a smart tactic. These enchanted books can later be applied to equipment using an Anvil, providing greater control over the final outcome.
Anvils, Combining, and Enhancing Enchantments
Anvils, crafted from Iron Blocks and Iron Ingots, are another fundamental part of the enchanting ecosystem. They enable players to:
Merge two enchanted items to combine their enchantments.Apply enchanted books directly to gear.Rename items for personalization.
However, using an anvil to combine enchantments requires XP and introduces the Prior Work Penalty. Each time an item is worked on, the XP cost for subsequent repairs or combinations increases. Eventually, an item may become "Too Expensive" to modify further. To manage this, plan your combination strategy thoughtfully, merging books in the most efficient order before applying them to your equipment.
Alternatively, a Grindstone can strip all non-curse enchantments from an item, granting a partial XP refund. This tool is helpful for resetting an item's enchantments or salvaging value from unwanted gear.
Mending and Unbreaking
Mending and Unbreaking are the cornerstone enchantments for any durable gear. Mending repairs the item automatically as you gain experience orbs, effectively granting it infinite lifespan with consistent use. Unbreaking provides a chance that the item won't take durability damage upon use, drastically slowing its wear and tear. When used together, these enchantments ensure your valuable equipment remains in service almost permanently, making them the highest priority for any item you enchant.
