Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other, the game utilizes 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. These cards are divided into the four traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, with each suit containing eight cards. The card rankings in each suit, from highest to lowest, are: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective is to capture tricks that contain high-value cards.

The scoring system breaks down as follows:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This results in a total of 28 points from the cards. In some versions, an extra point is awarded for the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, hence the game's name. However, many players today do not count this additional point, yet the game retains its name of 29 even when played with only 28 points.

Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives from the full deck are used as trump indicators, with each player receiving one card of each suit from this set. The Sixes serve as scorekeeping tools, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
