Gordang Batak

Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Batak Mandailing tribe. "Gordang" refers to drums or bedugs (large ceremonial drums), while "Sambilan" means nine. The Gordang Sambilan ensemble consists of nine drums with varying lengths and diameters, each producing distinct musical tones. Typically played by six performers, the smallest drums (numbered 1 and 2) serve as taba-taba, drum 3 as tepe-tepe, drum 4 as kudong-kudong, drum 5 as kudong-kudong nabalik, drum 6 as pasilion, and drums 7, 8, and 9 function as jangat. Originally reserved for sacred ceremonies, Gordang Sambilan has evolved with social changes and now frequently accompanies weddings, guest receptions, and national celebrations. As a cherished Indonesian cultural heritage, this drum ensemble has even been performed at the presidential palace. [2]
