Pesten With Cards is a beloved Dutch card game whose name translates to "Bullying With Cards." It's widely enjoyed across the Netherlands and shares similarities with other international games such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Uno, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, and more. The main objective of Pesten is simple: be the first player to play all of your cards and declare victory by saying "Last Card" before playing your final card. Forgetting to say "Last Card" results in a penalty—you must draw two additional cards.

The game can be played using multiple standard decks, including Jokers. Each player starts with 7 cards, and the remaining cards form the stock or draw pile. At the beginning of the game, the top card from the stock is revealed and placed face-up on the table to start the discard pile. Play proceeds clockwise. If a special "Pest-card" (such as a Joker or Two) appears at the start, its effect is applied as if the dealer had played it.

How to Play Your Turn

On your turn, you must play one card from your hand onto the discard pile. A playable card must match either the number or suit of the top card on the pile. However, Jokers and Jacks are exceptions—they can be played on any card. If you cannot play a valid card, you must draw one from the stock. If this newly drawn card can be played immediately, you'll be given the option to do so right away or keep it for later.

Last Card Rule

When you play a card and are left with only one card in hand, you must click the "Last Card" button above your cards to announce that you're down to your final card. This alerts all players of your progress. Failing to say "Last Card" before playing your winning card will result in a penalty—drawing two extra cards, and your last card won’t count as played. Similarly, falsely declaring "Last Card" when you still have more than one card also leads to a two-card penalty. You can press the "Last Card" button at any time—even when it’s not your turn—to ensure you’re ready when the moment comes.

If your final card is successfully played on the pile, you win the round. Note, however, that your last card cannot be a special card (as defined below).

Special Cards and Their Effects

Each card played may trigger a special action, depending on its rank. These rules can vary significantly based on regional preferences, so the game allows customization of these effects in the settings. Here’s a breakdown of common interpretations:

• Joker: The next player must draw 5 cards. If they hold a Joker themselves, they can counter by playing it, forcing the following player to draw 10 cards instead. Each additional Joker played adds 5 more cards to the total. Drawn cards cannot be played immediately, and play resumes with the next player after the penalty is applied.

• Two: The next player draws 2 cards. Like the Joker, a player holding a Two can respond with their own Two, increasing the penalty to 4 cards for the next player. Multiple Twos can stack, each adding 2 more cards. In some variations, a Joker can be played on a Two to add 5 extra cards to the penalty. However, a Two cannot be played on a Joker. Drawn cards cannot be used immediately, and the next player continues.

• Seven: After playing a Seven, you must immediately play another card. Be sure to click "Last Card" if this move leaves you with one card. If you cannot follow up the Seven with another playable card, you must draw from the stock.

• Eight: The next player loses their turn, allowing the player after them to go next. In a two-player game, this effectively gives you another turn immediately—similar to playing a Seven.

• Ten: All players must pass one card from their hand to the player on their left. Choose carefully which card to give!
