T-1000 Gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1 Echoes Terminator 2, Surprise Kameo DLC Revealed
NetherRealm Studios has unveiled the first gameplay footage for the T-1000, the latest DLC guest character in Mortal Kombat 1, alongside the announcement of Madam Bo as a new Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay evokes iconic scenes from Terminator 2, showcasing his signature blade and hook arms, reminiscent of the attacks used by characters like Baraka and Kabal. A standout moment features the T-1000 transforming into a liquid metal blob and performing an uppercut similar to Glacius from Killer Instinct.
The T-1000 is brought to life with the voice and likeness of Robert Patrick, who originally portrayed the character in the 1991 film. The teaser includes a clash with Johnny Cage and reveals one of the T-1000's Fatalities, which recreates the thrilling chase scene from Terminator 2 where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor in a truck. In this Fatality, the T-1000 morphs out of the driver's seat and unleashes a barrage of gunfire on Johnny Cage.
In a surprising twist, NetherRealm also announced that Madam Bo, a fan-favorite from the Mortal Kombat 1 story, will join the game as a Kameo fighter alongside the T-1000. Madam Bo, known for her heroic defense of her restaurant against Smoke and his goons, is briefly showcased in the teaser assisting the T-1000 in a fight against Johnny Cage.
The T-1000 will be available starting March 18 during the early access period for Khaos Reigns owners, with a wider release on March 25. Madam Bo will also be accessible from March 18 as a free update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase. The T-1000 marks the final character addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining the ranks of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian.
Amidst speculation about Mortal Kombat 1's sales and future DLC plans, Warner Bros. Discovery has reaffirmed its commitment to the franchise. CEO David Zaslav mentioned in November that the company plans to focus on just four titles, including Mortal Kombat. Meanwhile, NetherRealm's development chief, Ed Boon, assured fans in September that the studio had already decided on its next game three years ago but would continue supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time.
While fans eagerly await news of a potential third installment in NetherRealm's DC fighting game series, Injustice, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed any plans. The original Injustice: Gods Among Us launched in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. NetherRealm's decision to release Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 instead of another Injustice game was influenced by several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to Unreal Engine 4. Ed Boon expressed hope that the studio would return to the Injustice series in the future, emphasizing that the door is not closed on the franchise.
