How Does Split Fiction’s Friend’s Pass Work?

The defining feature of Split Fiction is its mandatory co-op gameplay—there is no single-player mode. You can team up locally via split-screen couch co-op, or play online with only one copy of the game. Cross-platform play is supported, enabling you to connect with friends regardless of their console or PC platform.

To play online with a friend, simply have them download the free “Split Fiction - Friend’s Pass” from their preferred digital store starting March 6. This version is entirely free and enables your friend to play alongside you after receiving an invitation. Hazelight implemented similar systems in It Takes Two and A Way Out. The only restriction is that the Friend’s Pass holder cannot play independently—they must join someone who owns the full game.

What Is Split Fiction?

Split Fiction is a two-player cooperative action-adventure game centered on a duo of writers—one specializing in sci-fi, the other in fantasy—who become trapped in their own fictional realms. Players collaborate to battle enemies and solve puzzles across levels inspired by science fiction and fantasy genres. One scenario might feature Tron-inspired light cycles and gravity-defying platforms, while another transforms players into mythical beings navigating a magical forest.

Levels also include portals to “side stories”—mini-games such as riding a Dune-esque sandworm across desert dunes or water-skiing behind a drone over ocean waves.
