Nintendo Switch OLED Is Somehow $100 Off at Walmart After Price Increases

The global economy has been behaving oddly lately — in some rather unfavorable ways. Between persistent inflation and tariff turmoil, many items are noticeably pricier than they were just a few years ago. I’m old enough to recall when game consoles typically dropped in price over their lifespan; now, the trend is reversed.

Xbox led the charge with initial price hikes, and Nintendo has recently increased prices on Switch 1 hardware as well. However, it appears Walmart missed the memo: they are currently selling the Switch OLED for just $299. This represents a $100 discount off the current MSRP and is even cheaper than the original pre-increase price. While I wouldn’t expect this deal to last long, you should grab one if interested.

Nintendo announced the price increases last week, and Target adjusted their prices immediately. Other retailers have followed suit, so this Walmart deal likely won’t last long before reverting to MSRP.

Should You Buy a Switch OLED When the Switch 2 Is Out?

The obvious question is: who wants to buy a Switch 1 now that the Switch 2 is available and shortages are over? Probably very few people should purchase a first-gen Switch at this point. If you plan to play video games for the next five to seven years (i.e., throughout this Nintendo console generation), you shouldn’t buy a Switch 1 in 2025; instead, go with the Switch 2. That’s my general advice: don’t buy a Switch 1 right now. The Switch 2 is backward compatible with nearly the entire Switch 1 library, often offering faster load times, and will support all new titles released over the next decade.

However, if you have a specific reason to want a Switch OLED — perhaps for your game console collection or because you desperately desire that stunning OLED display — now is the time to buy. This model rarely sees discounts. It has occasionally appeared in Black Friday bundles, and third-party retailers sometimes offer slight reductions, but it has never received an official MSRP drop since its 2017 launch until last week’s price increase.

So, if you’re certain you want to add a Switch OLED to your collection, this is the moment to act. It’s not necessarily recommended for everyone — most buyers should secure a Switch 2 before its potential (or likely) price hike. But if you know you want a Switch OLED, this is the deal you’ve been waiting for.
