Speculation about a Final Fantasy IX (FFIX) remake is building again following Square Enix’s updates to its 25th anniversary site. The inclusion of fresh profiles for beloved characters—Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, and Steiner—has fans viewing it as a promising hint toward an upcoming remake.

Earlier this year, the launch of the anniversary website alone sparked theories about a possible remake. The hype grew stronger weeks later when Square Enix shared a tweet featuring a quote from Vivi, the adored black mage.

The recent update includes small icons for half of the main cast on the website. Clicking on them reveals short summaries accompanied by new artwork from FFIX's character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, who also contributed to the Crystal Chronicles and Chocobo spinoff series. These profiles briefly outline each character’s story and ambitions.

Square Enix hasn’t made any official announcements, but the remarkable attention to detail in this anniversary celebration has led many to believe a major reveal is on the horizon. For now, fans will need to wait for further news regarding a possible FFIX remake.

Latest Anniversary Merchandise

Square Enix has also expanded its 25th-anniversary merchandise collection. New items include Garnet’s necklace, a wearable replica of Vivi’s hat, and a set of acrylic standees, among other collectibles.

Garnet’s Silver Necklace is now open for pre-orders and is scheduled to ship around November 15. It’s priced at approximately 38,500 yen (about $260). Meanwhile, the wearable Vivi hat replica is also available for reservation, aiming for a September 6 release, with a price tag of around 17,600 yen (roughly $120).

Another standout item is the Final Fantasy IX Acrylic Stand Collection, which features eight different designs. Sold as blind boxes, fans won’t know which character they’ll get until they open the package.

With all these developments and merch releases, a Final Fantasy IX remake seems increasingly likely. While Square Enix remains quiet about official plans, fans continue to hope that their cherished journey through Gaia will soon be revived.
