Final Fantasy IX Turns 25
Anniversary Picture Book Priced at 1,320 Yen on Amazon Japan and Rakuten
Debuting on July 7, 2000, Final Fantasy IX celebrates its silver anniversary with "Vivi and Grandpa On the Day of Departure" - a 44-page visual story exploring the Black Mage's early life with adoptive grandfather Quan. Developed by event planner Kazuhiko Aoki and character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, this prequel sets the stage for Vivi's eventual journey to Alexandria.
This collaborative project follows Aoki and Itahana's previous FF-themed picture book "Chocobo and the Airship" (2021 Japan/2023 worldwide). The new release is currently available digitally and physically through Amazon Japan and Rakuten for 1,320 yen (about $9 USD).
Complementing the book launch, Square Enix unveiled an expansive FFIX merchandise line including plush toys, character apparel like Vivi's signature hat, and a vinyl album blending original and reimagined tracks. While some items remain Japan-exclusive, the collection spans Square Enix's online store and Osaka pop-up location, with a Tokyo store opening July 25, 2025.
Special Edition FFIX-Zoff Eyewear Collection

Square Enix partners with Japanese eyewear brand Zoff for a limited FFIX 25th anniversary collection featuring three distinctive frame designs, each with custom wipes and cases. Currently available at select Zoff Japan locations:
⚫︎ Zoff Grand Tokyo Shibuya
⚫︎ Zoff Ikebukuro Sunshine City Alpa
⚫︎ Zoff Yaechika
⚫︎ Zoff Fukuoka Parco
⚫︎ Zoff Grand Front Osaka

Fittings run July 7-August 3, with online reservations opening early July. Participating stores will also offer collectible capsule toys containing special glasses wipes. Additional details will follow on Zoff's official platforms.
While anniversary merchandise continues expanding, Square Enix hasn't addressed longstanding remake speculation. The focus remains on commemorative products, though the upcoming anniversary date and vinyl release keep hopeful anticipation alive among fans.
