"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the beloved action horror franchise, has been delisted from digital storefronts by its publisher. Launched in 2022 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game received a solid 8/10 from IGN, with our review highlighting its thrilling yet rough-around-the-edges gameplay, reminiscent of the horror/comedy films that inspired it.
Despite the launch of a Game of the Year Edition a year later, the game struggled to maintain its player base. The cancellation of the Nintendo Switch version and the halt of content development in September 2023 were clear indicators of its declining fortunes. Now, three years after its initial release, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase, though its servers will continue to operate, allowing existing owners to keep playing.
In an official statement on the game's Steam page, developer and publisher Saber Interactive confirmed the delisting:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has sparked a wave of negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players mourning the game's effective demise. Despite this, the overall Steam user review rating remains 'mixed.' One positive review from a player with over 380 hours of playtime poignantly states, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, the team behind last year's successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to work on several licensed movie games. Upcoming titles include John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, Turok: Origins, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
