AMD Unveils Next-Gen Gaming Laptop Chips Using Last-Gen Architecture

Author : Audrey Update : May 25,2025

AMD has exciting news for gamers with the announcement of its next-generation Ryzen 8000 processors tailored for gaming laptops, spearheaded by the powerful Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the Ryzen AI 300 series chips introduced earlier this year, these new processors are built on the Zen 4 architecture from the previous generation. This move by Team Red introduces four new processors designed to elevate the performance of high-end gaming laptops.

Leading the charge is the Ryzen 9 8945HX, which boasts 16 cores and 32 threads, with a boost clock that can reach up to 5.4GHz. For those looking for a slightly less powerful but still impressive option, the Ryzen 7 8745HX comes with 8 cores, 16 threads, and a boost clock up to 5.1GHz. These new processors share specs remarkably similar to their predecessors, such as the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, which also featured 16 cores and a 5.4GHz boost clock alongside 80MB of cache.

Despite utilizing the last-generation Zen 4 architecture, these processors are set to be paired with the fastest graphics chips available in high-end gaming laptops. My earlier review of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile highlighted its struggles with the lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 processor, which was built on the newer Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can be configured to run between 55W and 75W, which should significantly enhance its performance. Although a Zen 5 chip with the same power budget would have offered even greater performance, the Ryzen 9 8945HX still promises substantial improvements.

If you've been holding off on purchasing a gaming laptop until AMD released its latest processors, your wait is nearly over. These new chips are expected to hit the market in high-end gaming laptops over the coming months. Below, I've detailed the specifications for each of the new processors:
