AI Meets Human Resistance: Nicolas Cage Declares AI Acting as a Digital Dead End

Author : Liam Update : Feb 22,2025

Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He believes robots are incapable of portraying the complexities of the human condition.

During his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the Saturn Awards (for his role in Dream Scenario), Cage voiced his concerns, as reported by Variety. He emphasized the importance of human creativity and emotional depth in acting, stating that AI-manipulated performances lack authenticity and integrity, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic merit. He urged actors to resist AI's encroachment on their craft, arguing that allowing AI to influence performance, even minimally, will ultimately lead to a loss of artistic purity and genuine human expression.

Cage's stance echoes similar concerns expressed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting industry where AI has been used to recreate performances, even in major video game titles. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have publicly criticized AI's use, highlighting its potential to negatively impact actors' livelihoods.

The film industry's response to AI is divided. While director Tim Burton expressed unease about AI-generated art, Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI technology rather than resisting its integration into filmmaking.
