Some Marvel Rivals Players Are Risking Bans
NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing modifications (mods). The company explicitly stated that any form of modding, from cosmetic alterations to performance-enhancing add-ons, violates the game's terms of service and risks permanent account bans.
This announcement follows the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which introduced new playable characters (Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four) alongside hero adjustments. Despite efforts to prevent modding in Season 1, workarounds have emerged, allowing players to bypass anti-cheat measures. One such mod, available on Nexus Mods, circumvents asset hash checks designed to detect modifications. The mod's creator, Prafit, clearly stated users assume all risks, including potential bans, and recommended it only for high-end PCs. Further, a mod transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, created by Ercuallo, circulated on social media.
While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company maintains its zero-tolerance policy regarding modifications, cheats, and hacks. Although some mods, including one featuring Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, Prafit's workaround remains available, boasting over 500 downloads.
Despite past instances of erroneous bans, NetEase Games has reiterated the consequences of violating the terms of service. The future actions of NetEase Games in response to ongoing modding remain to be seen. Marvel Rivals, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, continues to enjoy significant popularity since its December 2024 release.
