Dominoes are part of a set, often referred to as a deck or pack. The traditional Sino-European set contains 28 dominoes, also called bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each tile is a rectangle split into two square ends by a line, with each end marked with spots or left blank. Domino sets are versatile, similar to playing cards or dice, and can be used for numerous games. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are popular for games such as Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Different countries have their favorite variations: England enjoys muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican train, and Spain plays Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The transition from Chinese to modern dominoes is shrouded in mystery.

Here's a brief overview of the general rules of dominoes:

Blocking Game

The simplest form of dominoes is a two-player game using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled and placed face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, and the rest remain unused. Players arrange their tiles on-edge to keep them private. The game starts with one player laying down a tile, which varies by game. In Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0, and in Mexican train, it's the next lower double each round. Players take turns adding tiles to the line of play, matching the values of adjacent tiles. The game ends when a player uses their last tile or when play is blocked, with the player causing the block scoring points from the remaining tiles.

Scoring Game

Players score points based on specific configurations, moves, or by emptying their hand. Many scoring games derive from the draw game. In Muggins (All fives), points are scored when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points come from matching numbers on open ends. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile, and another player calls it after, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican train, the double zero domino is worth 50 points.

Draw Game

In draw games, players can draw from the stock before playing a tile. The game's score is the sum of pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, with most rules requiring two tiles to remain in the stock. Commonly referred to simply as "dominos," the draw game is a staple of the genre.
